Opinion line makes me wonder again

Sometimes the Wichita Eagle Opinion Line makes me wonder. Here’s something from today’s collection:

“Wanda Sykes should be given a $400 million contract and radio airtime opposite Rush Limbaugh. Let the free market and capitalism work, and we’ll see which one America really supports.”

The writer wants the free market to work. At the same time, the writer seems to be saying that someone should give the subject Wanda Sykes $400 million. (I think that’s the same amount as Limbaugh’s recent contract.)

Where I think this writer is confused is that Limbaugh was not given anything. He earns his pay, as far as I know. No one is forced to listen to or sponsor his show. Should the tastes of his listeners change, his show would fold.

The writer doesn’t say this, but I suspect the point is that the government should give Sykes this contract, giving her the chance to compete with Limbaugh. This has nothing to do with free markets and capitalism. It is just the opposite.

In reality, the fact that Sykes has no such contract is evidence of the free market working just perfectly.

Sadly, too many Americans seem to want a guarantee of some type of equality of outcome to meet their preferences. The opinion line person promoting Sykes demonstrates this flaw.

If the defunct Air America could put Sykes on air three hours a day against Limbaugh, she would probably have the same level of success as Al Franken, Randi Rhodes or the other lefties who failed miserably. The left already has NBCNNABCBSMSNPRNBC to watch, so who needs a lowly AM station.

Limbaugh and his backers vision was to fill the huge chasm of conservative opinion that was being ignored by the liberal press. That was true 20 years ago when Limbaugh first went national and it is true today.

When the Unfairness doctrine gets restored during the political Messiah from Chicago’s presidency, Limbaugh and the other conservative radio hosts like Hannity, Levin, Ingraham, and other will be relegated to the internet or shift over to Fox News.

Frankly, Fox News is too fair and balanced. If the media really wanted to hurt Fox News, someone would create a conservative version of MSNBC and take a large chunk of conservatives/limited government types who have no place else to go today, away from Fox. Has anyone noticed that all to many of the Republicans on Fox News are out of the “big government” Bill Crystal wing of the GOP that got W. Bush into trouble? The small government conservatives are not served well by a number of the Fox News Republican commentators.

An alternative to today’s Fox News from the small government side would take entrepreneurship, brains, and a willingness to take risk……the media morons in Manhattan aren’t that smart.

  2. I’LL LET THE REST OF YOU TALK ABOUT POLITICS AND
    CLIMATE!

UNFORTUNATELY WICHITA DOESN’T HAVE ANY SPCA
TO WATCH AND PROTECT OUR ANIMALS FROM ABUSE.
IN MY OPINION, NO PUPPY OR ANY ANIMAL SHOULD BE SOLD TO ANYONE WITHOUT GIVING THEM A CARD WITH A PHONE NO. TO CALL IF THIS ANIMAL CAN’T BE
PROPERLY TAKEN CARE OF BECAUSE OF OWNERS ILLNESS OR JUST PLAIN NEGLECT.
IF ANY PERSON DOESN’T OR CAN’T TAKE CARE OF THEIR ANIMAL OR ANIMALS WITH LOVE AND RESPONSIBILITY, THEN THEY SHOULDN’T HAVE ONE.
ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS MAKE A PHONE CALL AND LET THE HUMANE SOCIETY KNOW TO PICK UP THEIR
CAT, DOG, OR WHAT EVER THE ANIMAL WOULD BE.
YOUR PET CAN’T TALK OR SCREAM FOR HELP SO WE
NEED TO DO IT FOR THEM. STOP ANIMAL ABUSE!!!!!!!
