Kansas state government tax collections rose to $3,958 per person in 2021, an increase of 14.9 percent from 2020, and of 9.2 percent from 2019.
Each year the United States Census Bureau collects a summary of taxes collected by each state for 5 broad tax categories and up to 25 tax subcategories. (1)United States Census Bureau. Annual Survey of State Government Tax Collections (STC). Available at https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/stc.html. I’ve collected this data and made it available in an interactive visualization. Data is through 2021.
Using the Census Bureau data as a start, I prepared figures adjusted for population and inflation. Values are expressed as per-person values, and in dollars adjusted for inflation to 2021 values. They are for taxes collected by state governments only, not counties, cities, school districts, and other units of local government.
Nationally, tax collections by state governments rose by 13.7 percent in 2021 from the prior year as state economies recovered from the pandemic. The increase in Kansas was greater, at 14.9 percent. This comes after declines of 3.9 percent for the nation and 4.9 percent for Kansas in 2020, the year most greatly affected by the pandemic.
These are collections by Kansas, again per-person and inflation-adjusted:
2019: $3,624
2020: $3,445
2021: $3,958
For the nation, the figures are: $3,512, $3,377, and $3,841
Kansas collects more taxes per resident than our surrounding states. For 2021, Kansas collected $3,958 in taxes per resident. Colorado collected $3,313, Nebraska $3,545, Missouri $2,449, and Oklahoma $2,851. Kansas slightly exceeded Iowa, at $3,950.

In the following chart showing total tax collections per person over time, Kansas now collects more than our surrounding states.
Chart 3 shows individual income tax collections only, with Kansas highlighted. The wide swings over the past decade are evident.
Chart 5 shows the states with the amount of tax collected, and the rank.
The following charts present tax collected over time for major category subtotals. The first is for the nation, and then charts showing each state.
