Real GDP values by county, presented in an interactive visualization.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis, an agency of the United States Department of Commerce, produces measures of gross domestic product by county. These values are real, that is, adjusted for inflation.
GDP is the value of goods and services produced within a county. Specifically, according to BEA, “Gross domestic product by county is the value of goods and services produced by the county’s economy less the value of goods and services used up in production.” It is “the Bureau’s featured and most comprehensive measure of U.S. economic activity.”
I’ve added a computation of GDP per capita by taking the GDP for each county for each year and dividing it by the county population for each year. There are several views of the data, including charts, a table, and a map.
