Mr. Gabel, The government does not want free markets to prevail. They want to look good and make the citizens around that area think that government is good because they put whitewash on a termite pile. it is kinda like having a citizen militia. Do you think the govenor or government would call upon them?? HECK NO! Bless you for what you are doing but they want the citizens to beg to them.

Bob The most pronounced example of what you are writing about
was in the Aleutian Islands. In 1940 when the US Navy first started its base up there the Native population had a 0% unemployment, and 0 poverty. Today 60 years later they have 85% unemployment. Boy can’t Uncle Sam fix a problem.

This summer I purchased and fixed 7 of the “blighted properties”
in NE Wichita. All were on the city’s Condemnation list. Central
Inspection fought me every step of the way, but I fixed them.
Then showed them to Council woman Williams. I formulated a plan to fix 80 homes from Hillside to Grove and from Central to 21st street. Essentially every blighted home in that neighborhood. At no cost to the City. The plan would create 200 full time jobs, 200 part time jobs (all for people living within this area), pay $100,000 in back property taxes, and save the city $400,000 in demolition costs. In addition I promised to not rent these homes, I would only sell them to owner occupants. So the neighborhood would gain 80 new homeowners. You know what I got for a response, nothing so far. Maybe somebody is afraid I will cure this problem and make the City look bad. December 8th the Council will vote to violate 11 more property owners rights and tear their homes down. What a deal.

You are dead on. Perhaps the most pernicious lie in the history of political understanding is that liberalism and leftist thought is “compassionate” , and concerned with helping those less fortunate. Your synopsis and any study of the New Deal and the Great Society programs demonstrate that these initiatives create government dependence, and remove the drive and ambition from those they intended to help. This can be added to the growing list of unintended consequences born in the name of creating a utopian society. People want and need a hand up, not a hand out.
