Not all birds are equal, it seems

on

Recently ExxonMobil plead guilty to killing 85 birds. It paid $600,000 in fines and fees. An Oregon electric utility paid $1.4 million in fines for killing 232 eagles that had come into contact with poorly-designed power lines.

Wind energy producers, however, can kill with impunity. That’s the message of the story Windmills Are Killing Our Birds by Robert Bryce.

A July 2008 study of the wind farm at Altamont Pass, Calif., estimated that its turbines kill an average of 80 golden eagles per year. The study, funded by the Alameda County Community Development Agency, also estimated that about 10,000 birds — nearly all protected by the migratory bird act — are being whacked every year at Altamont.

Altamont’s turbines, located about 30 miles east of Oakland, Calif., kill more than 100 times as many birds as Exxon’s tanks, and they do so every year. But the Altamont Pass wind farm does not face the same threat of prosecution, even though the bird kills at Altamont have been repeatedly documented by biologists since the mid-1990s.

Political correctness gone wild? Of course.

    Bob,
Thanks for the article about windmills killing birds;I have never seen any s0-called environmentalist admit the number of birds being killed. Seems they are hypocrites as well.
Sure appreciate your dedication to keeping Wichitans informed.
    Sincerely,

It seems there is no destruction which environmentalists will not justify in the name of saving the earth. Biofuels? Demand for land to grow biofuel crops causes massive rainforest deforestation, and increased prices for these crops causes food prices to rise, pushing millions off the brink of starvation.

Compact fluorescent lightbulbs? CFL’s contain mercury, nd known health hazard and environmental toxin. If they break, you have to behave like a Hazmat team to clean them up (ask me how I know), and even if they make it to the end of their life without breaking, you still have to dispose of them specially, which the vast majority of people are not aware of, or if they are, their communities don’t have the necessary facilities.

Forest fires in California? Environmentalists’ demands to stop prudent forest maintenance in the name of “natural” forests have fueled the fires that gobble homes and destroy peoples’ lives.

Now they don’t care how many birds they kill as long as they think they’re sticking it to “Big Oil” and fulfilling their guru Al Gore’s mission.

I’m all for keeping the environment clean and the planet healthy, but only by applying sense, reason, and critical thinking!
